Hal Dunning serves as President and COO of Marsh & McLennan Agency’s (MMA) West region. He joined the firm in 2001, bringing over 20 years of experience to his role then. He is responsible for overseeing operations in California, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska.
Prior to joining MMA, Hal was the Western Region General Manager and Controller of ADS Environmental Systems. He also worked for Anthony Industries, Inc. (now K2, Inc.) from 1984 to 1994, holding positions as Corporate Controller, General Manager, and Executive Vice-President of Operations. Additionally, he worked in public accounting with Ernst & Whinney from 1980–1984.
In 2007, The San Diego Business Journal named Hal CFO of the Year, and in 2009, honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the journal’s CFO of the Year event. He is a member of the Lead San Diego Class of 2008 and was presented with their Herb Klein Visionary Leadership Award.
Hal has chaired the CFO Roundtable since 2001 and is chairman of Day for Change, a charity started by the CFO Roundtable that benefits abused and neglected children of San Diego. He also serves on the board of the San Diego Foundation and is a member of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. In 2012, after 11 years, he stepped down as President of the Board of Walden Family Services, the largest foster family agency in San Diego. Hal has volunteered at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, since 1995.
Hal earned a BA from Pomona College and an MBA in accounting and taxation from the University of Southern California.
